Ages 6 - 8

Search for Long Island Sound marine life as we explore the Long Wharf Nature Preserve! Coast Quest campers spend their day exploring the Long Island Sound coastline, searching for prehistoric horseshoe crabs and discovering oysters and mussels in their natural habitats! Campers play games, sing songs, and get their feet wet while learning about the local ecosystem. Campers focus on topicssuch as habitats, ecosystems, conservation, watersheds, water pollution, and stewardship of the coastline while having a blast exploring and making new friendships!

Ages 9 - 12

Campers spend half their day exploring the diverse habitats of the Long Island Sound from land and the other half on the water learning the fundamentals of basic sailing! Campers learn how to sail a small sailboat, learn basic boat handling maneuvers, knots, boat safety and how to work and communicate with a team. They develop courage, focus and tenacity adventuring on the protected waters of the New Haven Harbor while engaging in a science-based curriculum, crafts, and exploring the coastal habitats. We recommend campers register for two weeks of camp to gain sailing experience

Ages 10 - 12

Campers in the Two-Week Adventure Sailing Program must have some previous experience sailing or have sailed at Schooner Camp before. This two-week program is geared to give campers a more in depth experience with sailing, skippering and maneuvering sailboats. Campers spend half their day exploring the diverse habitats of the Long Island Sound from land and the other half on the water learning the fundamentals of sailing! Campers learn how to sail and skipper a small sailboat, learn detailed boat handling maneuvers, knots, boat safely and how to work and communicate with a team.

Ages 13-14

The Leadership & Sailing program is a two week opportunity for teens to continue at camp as they get older with a focus on building personal skills, sailing skills, and showing leadership with camp youth. Campers focus on team building and leadership skills while exploring the Long Island Sound both on land and on the water. Campers participate in half a day of sailing activities, and half day land and large group activities, and mentor younger campers through time spent assisting Environmental Educators and Sailing Instructors.

Ages 15+

The Junior Counselor program is an opportunity for teens, 15 and up to gain volunteer hours, act as a positive role model and gain experience to working with youth. Assist adult staff with a small group of campers, running games, assisting with crafts, teaching sailing, exploring nature and much more. We ask Junior Counselors to attend a two-day training prior to camp to learn basic youth development skills, camp expectations and meet summer staff. Junior Counselors may volunteer for multiple weeks, but must commit to at least one full week. To apply for this program, parents need to register through the summer camp registration system. We will reach out in June regarding training dates and with a short questionnaire.
