Volunteer
The New Haven Land Trust depends on the commitment of regular volunteers to assist us in managing our preserves and community gardens. Restoring habitat and working in a community garden benefits nature and nurtures community relationships. We welcome and thank you for your time and dedication.
Garden projects consist of planting seeds, weeding, spreading mulch and compost, fence building and minor landscaping. Preserve projects range from trash cleanup, bridge building & restoration, trail clearing & construction and invasive plant removal.
We have opportunities for educators to teach gardening workshops or lead nature walks. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please review our listed opportunities and contact: Volunteer@newhavenlandtrust.org.
Opportunities
Nature Preserve Projects:
Invasive Plant Removal: This activity is seasonal, generally from June through October. Typically you will be cutting woody plants (trees, shrubs or vines) and treating the cut with glyphosate. This is a closely supervised activity and instruction is provided on site.
Wood Removal: Salt marsh restoration work is ongoing at the Long Wharf Nature Preserve to remove wood debris. We can accommodate a group of at least 10-100 volunteers to help with this project. We will also be planting native trees and shrubs in the spring. This activity requires digging and mulching. Supervision and instruction will be provided on site.
Path Clearing and Repairs: This project is located at the Pond Lily Preserve. A short path leading to the fish-way viewing window has been washed away by flooding and needs repair. This will involve filling the area with rubble and stone dust. Supervision and instruction will be provided on site.
