Mission
The New Haven Land Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to land
conservation, environmental education and community vegetable gardening in New
Haven. The Trust currently maintains seven preserves, close to 60 acres, with a
variety of habitats: shore-front, salt marsh, river bank, and trap-rock ridge.
In addition the Land Trust manages the Community Vegetable Garden Program which
provides land, technical assistance and supplies to almost 50 community
vegetable gardens. The New Haven Land Trust is a 501(c)3 and is supported by The
Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the City of New Haven and individual
donors.
The New Haven Land Trust achieves its mission by:
-
Community Gardening: Assist neighborhoods in development and maintenance of
approximately 50 gardens with materials, supplies, utilities, technical
assistance and neighborhood outreach. Sponsor annual conferences.
-
Land Conservation: Acquire, preserve and protect open space; conduct
educational programs; distribute newsletters; nature walks; outreach to
schools and neighborhoods.
-
Environmental Education: Installing an educational kiosk at Long Wharf
Nature Preserve and developed two self guiding nature walks at Long Wharf
Nature Preserve and Quinnipiac Meadows/Fargeorge Nature Preserve. Long Wharf
Nature Preserve serves as the site for Horseshoe crab research by Sacred
Heart University.
