Bioregional Garden

The Bioregional “Life Boat Garden” is a great example of how a relatively small parcel of land can help sustain people’s nutritional needs throughout the year.  In all, there are 10 gardeners working the garden.

The Bioregional Garden is part of the Bioregional Group which, among other things, is interested in grounding human society and culture in natural systems. The goal for ‘Life Boat Garden’ is as Fred explains:   “We know that the Titanic sailed with less than its full complement of lifeboats, and as a result many died unnecessarily. This occurred because it was thought that the Titanic is unsinkable. We do not believe that our present system is unsinkable. Every ship needs lifeboats, just in case. We want to encourage people to plant Lifeboat Gardens either in their private yards or in shared spaces.”

As such, several offshoot projects are underway to promote gardening in the community. One project is the ‘Thousand Garden’s Project. ’ “Wishing to see more gardens planted this year, we hit on the idea of working through churches to promote gardening. We felt that we could progress more rapidly by working through existing groups and networks than by going to individuals one by one.”
The Bioregional Garden was listed on the Connecticut NOFA 2009 Organic garden Tour. Find out more about the Bioregional garden on the Bioregional website http://newhavenbioregionalgroup.org.
