Bassett Street

Levon Quattlebaum reported that the garden got off to a late start this season and so the crops were quite small even by late July. Nonetheless, the garden appears to be in very good shape and was being worked by several residents of an adjacent house as well as Mr. Quattlebaum, who lives just 2 doors down from the garden.   In all, seven gardeners participate in the Bassett Street Garden.

Mr. Quattlebaum is a very distinguished gentleman, retired,  who keeps and immaculate home on Bassett Street. His garden is likewise very neat and tidy and is a real asset to the esthetics of the neighborhood. Like other gardens in Newhallville, Mr. Quattlebaum reported that most of what the garden produces is given away to neighborhood residents. As such, this particular garden crosses the line between being a purely ‘Community Garden’ and an ‘Urban Farm’ as defined in the “2009 Urban Garden Strategy”.
Crops produced include:

  • Beans
  • Peas
  • Lettuces
  • Greens (Collard, etc..)
  • Eggplant
  • Cucumber

Goals:
Goals for next year will be to work closely with Mr. Quattlebaum on getting full documentation on the names and addresses of all garden participants and to document who outside the garden is receiving food and in what quantities. Other strategies will include better posting of ‘Open Hours’ when residents can visit the garden and training of gardeners to ensure open hours are maintained and that someone is present during those times to ensure that the integrity of the garden is maintained.
